Looking Back at In Our Words, as presented by CT Folk

=========================================

Looking Back at In Our Words, as presented by CT Folk (Spring 2022) and… Looking Ahead to Performances by Featured Artists: * Paula Boggs Band: August 19th @ Levitt Pavilion, Westport * ACES Educ. Ctr. for the Arts Choir: Sept. 11 @ CT Folk Fest, New Haven

As CT Folk plans for future events that engage our community, I wanted to shine a light on an online CT Folk event, In Our Words, from this past spring that brought together students attending ACES Educational Center for the Arts (ECA) with professional musicians, who shared their insights about song-writing and story-telling. By way of background, ACES-ECA provides an afternoon arts program to regional area high school students who excel in the various visual and performing arts. Through this half-time program, students are able to deepen their knowledge and talents in their respective art disciplines, after taking academic coursework at their sending schools in the morning.

The In Our Words program featured three students from ECA’s creative-writing department who shared their own stories, as well as three students from ECA’s music department, who performed their original songs (and one with accompaniment from another ECA music student). Interspersed with the students’ written and musical story-telling were well-crafted songs performed by professional musicians and song-writers. These included Thabisa, Friction Farm (featuring Christine Stay and Aidan Quinn) and Paula Boggs, performing with her band. These eclectic artists were invited to participate, based on their ability to share well-crafted stories, as well as because of their commitment to social justice issues, as they advocate for the good in the world. And we very much appreciate their genuine enthusiasm for supporting and creating space for our younger artists! You can view the entire program, as hosted and technically coordinated by CT Folk board members Thabisa Rich, Shelley Mackinnon and Dan McGurk, here.

The Paula Boggs Band will be performing in a free concert at the Levitt Pavilion in Westport CT, this Friday, August 19th at 7:30 pm. Bill Revill will be featuring some of the band’s music today from 6 – 8 pm on his weekly radio show, Acoustic Blender live-streamed here on WESU. Bill presents great folk and other acoustic music every Tuesday evening, so do give a listen!

AND a choir made up of talented students from ACES Educational Center for the Arts’ music department will open up the 2nd day of CT Folk Fest to take place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10th and 11th in Edgerton Park, New Haven. Be prepared to be wowed by these great young vocalists! And you will definitely want to check out the rest of the inspired line-up of musical artists, as well as other programming offered at this year's CT Folk Festival and Green Expo.
